Prince Roman was the only son of Grand Duke Peter Nikolaevich (1864-1931) and Grand Duchess Militsa Nikolaevna (1866-1951).
In November 1921, he married Countess Praskovya Dmitrievna Sheremeteva (1901-1980), the couple had two sons: Prince Nikolai Romanovich (1922–2014) and Prince Dimitri Romanovich (1926–2016).
Prince Roman Petrovich died on 23rd October 1978 in Rome, he is buried in the cemetery of Monte Testaccio in Rome.
