On this day — 11th August 1958 — Nikolai Alexandrovich Kulikovsky (born 1881), the second husband of Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna (1882-1960) died in Cooksville, Ontario, where the couple lived since 1952.
During the latter years of his life, Nikolai Aleksandrovich was seriously ill, having suffered from a spinal injury which he received during the First World War. By 1952, Kulikovsky had shrunk more than 4 inches (10 cm) from his peak height of 6 ft 2 inches (188 cm). By 1958, he was virtually paralyzed, and had difficulty sleeping.
In his book ‘The Last Grand Duchess’ Ian Vorres wrote: “In late spring of 1958, Colonel Kulikovsky became increasingly paralyzed. He lay on the sofa in the living room, and Olga Alexandrovna nursed him to the end. In early summer, he died in his sleep. He was seventy-six. They had given each other forty-two years of married happiness which had withstood all the shocks and grief’s they had borne together.”
A funeral service for Nikolai Alexandrovich Kulikovsky, was held on 13th August 1958, at the Church of Christ the Saviour in Toronto. He was buried on the same day, at the North York Cemetery in Toronto, where two years later, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna also found her eternal rest.
Memory Eternal! Вечная Память!
