The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg has begun preparations for the restoration of famous equestrian monument to Emperor Alexander III.
The monument was created in 1906-1909, by the sculptor Paolo Trubetskoy by order of Nicholas II. It was installed and consecrated on 5th June (O.S. 22nd May) 1909 on Znamenskaya Square in St. Petersburg.
On 15th October 1937, it was moved to the courtyard of the Benois Wing of the State Russian Museum , and in 1994 it was moved again to it’s current location in the courtyard of the Marble Palace.
This will be the first restoration in the history of the monument, which will entail complex research. The restoration process will include cleaning the surface of the monument, as well as restoring the lost details — the reins that the emperor held in his hand, and the brush on the hilt of the saber.
