Emperor Nicholas II enjoyed physical activity of all kinds. I have no doubt, that it helped relieve some of the stress of his high stress role of ruler of the Russian Empire.
In this photo, we see him shoveling snow from the pathways near the Alexander Palace, during his house arrest at Tsarskoye Selo, during the winter of 1916-17.
