Throughout its history, the façade of the Winter Palace has undergone a wide range of colours. In 1901, Emperor Nicholas II ordered the palace and the surrounding buildings including the General Staff on Palace Square to be painted in a terracota red colour.
The current palace’s largely green and white exterior was adopted during the Soviet years in 1946.
